Amazing Olympics! But What Is The Legacy In Bucks?

Amazing Olympics! But What Is The Legacy In Bucks?

6:12am 13th August 2012

As interest in sport, inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, reaches an all time high, Bucks Sport, the Buckinghamshire Sports Partnership and strategic partner of Sport England, have announced its' post Olympic legacy programme to ensure Bucks residents have easy access to a wide range of sports activities, training and facilities on their doorstep for many more years to come.

Through seven different programmes aimed at a mix of young people, schools, workplaces, adults, talented sportspeople, those with disability, coaches and would be coaches, Bucks Sport is hoping to help 'keep a generation inspired.'

Mark Ormerod, Director  of Bucks Sport told Mix 96:

"The Olympics is putting sport in the spotlight as never before and we're ready to respond to this opportunity to get even more people in Buckinghamshire involved in some kind of sporting activity.   The end of the Games actually marks the start of the legacy work we will implement here in Bucks.

We're working with a range of partners to ensure a co-ordinated delivery network is in place to keep the magic of the games in the heart of the local community, helping improve facilities, training more people to make sport happen and creating more opportunities.

Since we won the Olympic bid, we've already seen a big increase in sporting activity in the County, especially in sports such as running, cycling and netball."

One such programme is Reactivate.  Kicking off again in September, it now offers a month long line-up of free and reduced price sports and activity sessions at hundreds of venues around the county.  Open to all adults (14+ yrs), it's an opportunity for people to test drive a new sport or get back into one they have previously enjoyed.

And following on from the incredible successes witnessed at Dorney Lake during the Games, another initiative soon to launch is CanRow. An opportunity for people who saw rowing and sprint canoeing on TV to actually take part at Dorney.

Other Buckinghamshire 'London 2012'  legacy programmes include:

  • Sportivate - targeting 14-25 year olds to find a sport of their choice and take up regular participation at a local club.
  • Get Active - specific sessions for adults with learning disabilities with activities ranging from dance and football to water and chair based exercise.
  • Sport Makers - inspiring and training people to make sport happen in their communities with friends, family and colleagues.
  • Workplace Challenge - opportunities for Bucks based businesses to get their staff more active, support local good causes and sponsor local talented athletes.

The Bucks Sport Talent PasSport - an initiative to identify, celebrate and support the County's most talented sports performers.   It will provide national level sports people with free access to a number of the country's sports facilities for training and development at designated off peak times.

The Government's Lottery reforms mean Sport England is in a position to invest £150 million of additional money into its Places People Play legacy programme and Bucks Sport intends to ensure that people in the county maximise the benefits benefit from it.  Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes has already been awarded £365,000 in the latest round of facility investment and further rounds of funding will become available.

The Sports Partnership is on hand to advise and support local clubs seeking funding.  National Governing Bodies of Sport are now awaiting the outcome of their Whole Sport Plan applications to grass roots lottery funder Sport England. This amounts to an additional £450m, some of which will be invested into Buckinghamshire based projects and sports clubs.

If you're a resident, a club/sports facility, coach or would be coach,  Bucks Sport can help you benefit from local and national London 2012 Games legacy programmes and funding. Details HERE or call 01296 585215.
