'Concern' Over Increase To Elderly Population

Mix96 has learnt the number of over 65's living in Aylesbury Vale by 2020 is set to increase by 11 thousand or 44 per cent.

Later this year the government is giving free home care to those seen as in "the highest need".

It comes as Bucks County Council are trying to make around 30 million pounds worth of savings.

The National Housing Federation predicts the number of over 65s living in rural England will hit 3.23m by 2020, a rise of 907,900 (39%) from 2008.

The five worst affected areas in the south east will be:

    * Aylesbury Vale in Buckinghamshire which will see a 44.5% rise in over 65s by 2020 to 35,700
    * Test Valley in Hampshire which will see a 42.5% rise in over 65s by 2020 to 27,500
    * Horsham in West Sussex which will see a 41.9% rise in over 65s by 2020 to 33,200
    * West Oxfordshire which will see a 41.8% rise in over 65s by 2020 to 25,100
    * East Hampshire which will see a 37.9% rise in over 65s by 2020 to 27,300

A Federation spokesperson said "Making matters worse, young people and families on modest incomes in rural south east communities could increasingly find themselves priced out of our villages and market towns, prompting fears that many rural areas will struggle to attract the key workers needed to care for and support the ageing population. The Federation, which represents England’s housing associations, estimates around 100,000 new affordable homes need to be built in England alone to meet demand in rural areas over the next 10 years. The Federation is calling on all local authorities to draw up action plans to assess their local housing needs and how they plan to meet that need."
