Cancer Care & Haematology Week on Mix96

All this week we're taking an indepth look at the Cancer Care Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville. We'll talk to the staff, the patients, and find out how you can help.

Nathan from Drivetime talks to his wife, Becky, about their experience of the Cancer Care & Haematology Unit;

Today Nathan finds out more about what the Unit does and how they strive to create a calming atmosphere for patients during such a difficult time:

It's essential to keep patients relaxed and calm when receiving treatment. Nathan went to the Unit to find out why;

The Cancer Care & Haematology Unit is a charity, so relies heavily on donations. Today Nathan finds out more about the finances, including the money used to provide a free wig for every patient, something his wife found invaluable during her treatment;

We ended the week by meeting Penny from Aylesbury, who has beaten ovarian cancer after being diagnosed in 2011. She told Nathan how hard it was telling her family, her experience of the Unit, and how she felt the moment she was told about her cancer;

Thanks to Tony from Candyfloss For All Events, Aylesbury, who will be donating £50 to CCHU after fundraising at Santa's Parade in Aylesbury - top man Tony!

About the Cancer Care & Haematology Unit

This unique standalone facility was designed & purpose built to provide a wide range of outpatient and day care treatments for patients with cancer or a haematological disorder. Oncology & Haematology outpatient clinics are held there, chemotherapy and supportive treatments such as blood transfusions are given within the treatment area & complementary therapies are administered by our skilled team of volunteers.

Providing holistic care has always been an essential part of the ethos of the CCHU & patients & their families also receive emotional support, information & advice within a building which has been designed, as far as possible, to be calm, comfortable & relaxing.
