Weston Turville Historical Soc. Thames Valley MillionairesPagan Ēostra to Christian Easter
“Pagan Ēostra to Christian Easter” Colin Oakes

Our March talk explains how the name Easter comes from a Celtic God. making it another example of a Pagan event combined with a real Christian festival. The fact that Easter is the primary Christian festival, not Christmas makes it even stranger that its name comes from an Iron Age Deity long before Christianity.

There is now a whole sequence of Christian events and traditions surrounding it, Maundy Thursday, Lent, Good Friday, Pentecost. Join us to unravel the story and learn about the eggs, bunnies, parades, controversies and fridge magnets.

Colin is an archaeologist and London Guide, who has been a regular and popular speaker at the Society (and all around the Chilterns) since 2006 and last visited us in November 2015 to talk to us about Christmas Celebrations.
