The end of the world is nigh, or so apocalypse observers would have you believe…

The Mayan calendar began in 3114BC and has continued without issue ever since but it comes to an abrupt halt on 21 December 2012. Instead of buying a new calendar like the rest of us, believers are convinced that this will be the last date on earth.

Some things you might like to know about the Mayans:

The Maya civilization had thriving city states from about 300 B.C. to 1100 A.D.

They had elaborate religious ceremonies overseen by priests, honouring a pantheon of gods linked to nature and to astronomy.

They had trade networks which stretched into northern Mexico, east into the Caribbean, and south to the Amazon.

They had systems for collecting water and growing corn and other crops, they had tools for construction and ceremony and war and they had artists who carved and painted records of their history.

They worshiped the maize god! They believed that maize was not just the cornerstone of their diet, but that all mankind are also made from dough. Mmmmmmm… Dough!
