To plan and deliver play activities for children as part of a team overseeing the general running of a secure play centre within the framework of JPPC’s policies and procedures. Ensure the safe provision of travel to, access to, and use of the centre following OFSTED guidelines and the Early Years Statutory Framework. Assist with the administration and promotion of the centre to ensure and develop high standards of customer care.


Role Specific:

To plan, prepare and deliver quality play opportunities for children from the ages of 4 to 13 at the Holiday Playschemes, within a safe and caring environment. These may include:

Arts & Crafts

Sports & Games


Group Games.

and more


Working with the Playleader to ensure the healthy and safe running of the Play Centre site, including:


Adhering to OFSTED directives in terms of safe, high quality play provision.

Ensure the safe collection of children from schools by foot, minibus or taxi. Including liaison with schools and teachers.

Setting up the play space including moving furniture and play equipment.

Following strict procedures in terms of entry and exit to the premises.

Supervision of children to ensure that all activities are undertaken with minimal risk and within centre guidelines.

Maintaining high standards of hygiene throughout the centre, including inspecting and cleaning of all areas as appropriate.

Providing refreshments and ensuring that hygiene, health and safety standards are met.

Administering first aid (if qualified) and recording of all accidents and incidents occurring during the play session.

Keeping all play equipment and materials clean, in good order and safely stored.

Consulting with children and involving them in planning activities.

Encouraging parental involvement in the Centre.


To assist the Playleader in the administration of the Play Centre, including:

Management of casual staff

Administration of bookings for Holiday Playschemes

Keeping all records accurate and up to date

Receiving and accurately recording income

Completing registers and reacting appropriately to absence ensuring that all children are accounted for

Updating daily computerized and manual records of the centres attendances and activities

Attending meetings relating to the Play Centre and wider Town Council team

Acting up to lead sessions in the absence of the Playleader.


Adapting and developing the services of the centre and its staff:

Supporting other Town Council activities and events away from the Play Centre such as Aylesbury on Sea, Live in the Park, etc.

Working on some Saturdays/Sundays when Birthday Party Hires are taking place at the centre

Developing and progressing ideas to increase the profile and income of the Play Centre

Retaining and updating required qualifications for playwork

Attending and completing training courses for personal development that are also of benefit to the service. This also includes online training.





The following skills and experience to be demonstrated when established in the role:

Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults

Able to efficiently plan and organize children’s play

Have strong administration skills and ability to complete registers and take bookings and payments for play sessions.

Ability to work effectively with and contribute to the team environment

Have flexible, adaptable and creative approach to delivering play service





Key Knowledge & Skills and Job Specific Requirements

Qualifications at level 2 or 3 in childcare or Playwork (essential)

Relevant experience of working with groups of school age children

Sound understanding of child protection and safeguarding regulations and procedures

Understanding of the importance of play in children’s development

Understanding the issues of equal opportunities

Sound judgement and common sense

Willingness to train and applying learning from training within the settings

Sufficient understanding and use of English to ensure the wellbeing of the children*

Desirable qualities

Experience of working within a play/nursery based setting

Experience of administration

Competent in using IT to support play and centre administration

Ability to work on own initiative

Appropriate child protection training

Current Paediatric First Aid Certificate

Food Hygiene Certificate

Salary:                       £4,273.00 per annum (£17,092 full time equivalent)

Job Grade:               2 / 3                

Hours per Week:    37.5 – School Holidays (Monday to Friday, shifts of 7.5 hours per day will be allocated between 7.30am – 7pm)

Annual Leave:   The current annual leave entitlement is 58 hours (21 days plus 2 statutory days full time equivalent)
