Volunteer Assessor

VA/0319

Citizens Advice Aylesbury Vale

Are you a good listener who likes helping people with their problems? Do you enjoy learning new skills & working as part of a team? Are you available to volunteer for a minimum of 6 hours per week? This could be the rewarding opportunity you are looking for - you can help us make a real difference to people in your community.

We can all face problems that seem complicated or intimidating. At Citizens Advice, we believe no one should have to face these problems without good quality, independent advice.  As an independent local charity, with offices in Aylesbury and Buckingham, most of the work at Citizens Advice Aylesbury Vale is carried out by highly trained volunteers supported by a small team of paid staff. Without the support of our volunteers we would cease to function.

Our clients and volunteers come from all walks of life. We are committed to providing an independent, free, confidential & impartial advice service, and volunteering opportunities, to the whole community – regardless of race, disability, sexuality or nationality.

Volunteer Assessors provide an efficient and effective triage service to members of the public. This is a dynamic role where you will explore the client’s situation (either face to face at a drop-in session or via our telephone Adviceline). You will assess the urgency of the client’s issues and their ability to deal with the problems themselves and help to agree next steps (which could require providing information, signposting or making an appointment for them to see an Adviser for more in-depth help). This is a supported role and you will attend a comprehensive training programme to learn all aspects of the role and the aims & principles of our organisation. Future opportunities to develop your skills by further self-study & training to become an Adviser may be available in due course.

No specific qualifications or experience are required, as you will receive full training. You must have a good telephone manner, be able to communicate clearly both orally & in writing and be confident using a computer to find and accurately record information. You will appreciate the necessity for confidentiality, be impartial and non-judgemental when dealing with clients.

We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 hours per week, once trained, and although generally each Assessor is on the rota for 1 day per week for 6 hours, we can be flexible (ie two 3 hour shifts per week). We ask that once trained, you stay with us for a minimum of 6 months where possible.

You will need to be willing & able to attend our initial 8 week training course (at our office in the heart of Aylesbury town) held on Thursdays 10am-1pm (commencing April 2019), in addition to doing home study and observing other Assessors at work (approx 10-12 hours in total per week during the training period). Ongoing training will be available to develop your skills and attending our bi-monthly Team Meetings will keep you updated on current issues and give you a chance to meet other volunteers and staff members.

We will reimburse travel expenses incurred as a result of volunteering for us.
