Case For HS2 Tunnelling Goes To Westminster

Case For HS2 Tunnelling Goes To Westminster

Published by the Mix96 News Team at 6:58am 13th July 2015.

The case for a longer HS2 tunnel through the Chilterns goes in front of MPs today.

The HS2 Select Committee will hear from three Buckinghamshire councils on why extra tunnelling is needed.

The plans at the moment have a tunnel under South Bucks, but the line comes above ground near Great Missenden, the alliance of councils want that tunnel extending to Stoke Mandeville to protect the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Once the Select Committee has heard all the evidence it will make recommendations to the government.

Tom Walsh is from Wendover, which would be protected by the alternative plan:

"The Parish councils have put in a lot of money into finding experts that will write a report that will counter the arguments that HS2 will put forward, so we're using those to prepare for our presentations at the Houses of Parliament."

"The basic principal is that this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), if they're to have any currency in the future, if we can't talk the government into a sensible decision of having a longer tunnel, AONBs won't have any currency at all"

The organisations giving evidence today are: Chiltern District Council, Buckinghamshire County Council, Aylesbury Vale District Council and The Chilterns Conservation Board.
