Will We Move Closer To One Council For Bucks This Year?

Will We Move Closer To One Council For Bucks This Year?

After announcing earlier this year that they wanted to be the only council in Aylesbury Vale, AVDC say they're still looking at the idea.

The Unitary argument's been going on a while, with the council trying to take a lead earlier in 2015.

Leader Neil Blake says they're getting closer to running out of options:

"You can't just keep cutting costs year on year on year, because then you'll have no one to provide the services that are so valued by our residents.

"So it's a two-pronged attack: become more commercial, look at other ways of generating income, and be more efficient at delivering services."

A report has stated that around £25m could be saved by merging Bucks County Council and the Districts, leaving a 'unitary' council, plus the Town and Parishes.

Another option is to split the county in two, effectively leaving control in Aylesbury Vale and Wycombe.

But no one can agree on what's best and the government's not been very supportive of the initiative until recently.

County Council leader Martin Tett told us he thinks there should just be one council for the whole of Bucks, but it has to be done properly.

Neil added:

"I think to bury your head in the sand is just not an option.

"We've got to all talk with each other, within Buckinghamshire and outside of Buckinghamshire.

"It's the only way councils are going to become more efficient and not go bust."
