Chesham and Amersham's MP has been elected as Vice Chairman of a new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Timber Industries.

The group aims to help grow the use of timber and develop vibrant timber based industries. More than 40 parliamentarians have already registered as members.

Timber Industries contribute substantially to the UK Construction and Manufacturing Industries, providing around 150,000 jobs across the skills spectrum and adding value of c£20bn to the UK economy.

The APPG will help promote timber as the most sustainable and renewable building material and develop new measures to grow the whole timber industries supply chain.

The parliamentarians also want to encourage more young people to choose a career in the timber industries.

The new APPG held its AGM this week at the House of Commons. Cheryl Gillan MP was elected as an officer of the group alongside Stephen McPartland MP (Conservatives), Ian Paisley MP (DUP), Stephen Hepburn MP (Labour), Steven Paterson MP (SNP)

Cheryl Gillan said:

"I am delighted to have been elected by my colleagues in both Houses. I am looking forward to being a vice chairman to this new group which has already received widespread cross-party support in the Commons and the Lords.

"I am especially pleased to be able to support this sector as there has always been a rich tradition of timber businesses flourishing in the Chilterns economy, from forest production to furniture making and manufacturing brushes and brooms in Chesham.

"Last year I visited a company which is growing 'green energy' crops locally and I am a great champion of sustainable woodland, preserving the ancient woodlands of the Chilterns.

"One of the earliest constituency campaigns with which I was involved, in 1992, was to save Penn Wood. I also sit on the Furniture APPG. I will endeavour to promote the use of timber UK wide but I am committed to supporting timber businesses in Amersham and Chesham in particular."

In Cheryl's constituency there are the following timber related businesses in Amersham:

  • Exterior Solutions (hardwood decking, cladding and flooring)
  • Grafton/T Brewer & Co. (timber importer and merchant)
  • Jewsons (builders' merchants)
  • Town & Country Flooring Design.
