Concerns For Safety After Bourg Walk Bridge Assault

Published by the Mix96 News Team at 6:11am 7th June 2016.

An Aylesbury Councillor wants to see more CCTV in the town, after he was assaulted on the Bourg Walk Bridge.

Councillor Gary Powell was hit by water bombs after a group of teenage boys targeted him last Friday evening about 5pm.

He told us:

"The youths were probably between twelve and fifteen, and they were all Asian and all seemed to be dressed in black.

"One of the youths made a disrespectful comment to me as I walked past, which I ignored.

"Then, I could hear one of them behind me shouting "jaaldi, jaaldi", and this was followed by objects being thrown at me, which hit me in the back and the neck.

"A friend of mine who speaks Urdu has explained that, in this context, "jaaldi, jaaldi" means" "Quickly, quickly".

CCTV didn't manage to capture the offenders who ran off in the other direction down Penn Road.

He continued:

"We all need to feel secure when we use that bridge, we need to know that there is 24 hour CCTV coverage across the whole bridge and at the approaches to both ends of the bridge aswell."

He's already talking to the council to see if this can happen.

Councillor Powell continued:

"The police were very efficient in how they dealt with the incident, but I would like to see more officers patrolling the town centre.

"I understand that's a question of resources but this is something I would very much like to see as I know residents of Aylesbury would."

"What we won't want in Aylesbury or anywhere else in the country is gangs of youths looking for trouble and picking on members of the public when they think there is nobody else around to defend them."
