Local Care Home 'Requires Improvement' In Two Areas

A care home in Aylesbury has been given a 'requires improvement' rating in both the 'safe' and 'effective' categories of a new inspection report.

The report, written by the Care Quality Commission, found that some new staff at Cherry Tree House had not passed all the checks required to work in a home, meaning that some residents could 'potentially be at risk from staff who may have been unfit to work in a home'. This led to a 'requires improvement' rating in the 'safe' category.

When the commission discussed the concerns with the home, the new unchecked staff were removed from duty until they had passed all the necessary requirements.

The report also found that some staff members were not aware of various legal acts relevant to their role. It stated:

'The training policy for staff was not up to date and we found deficits in staff knowledge about the Mental Capacity Act 2005'.

The Mental Capacity Act is a framework on how to make decisions for those who may not be in a fit state to make them themselves. This led to the report giving a 'requires improvement' rating in the 'effective' category.

The report went on to say:

We spoke with the manager who informed us this training was planned to become mandatory and would be completed annually.

The remaining categories of 'caring', 'responsive' and 'well-led' were judged to be 'good'. Highlights of praise the report had for the home include:

  • 'People spoke positively about the caring nature of the staff.'
  • 'There was a range of activities to keep people stimulated.
  • 'People and their relatives told us staff were skilled in how to care for people and encourage independence'.
  • 'Overwhelmingly people and their relatives told us how caring and kind the staff were to them. We observed this during our visit.'
