MP Wants Emergency Debate On HS2

Before Parliament is dissolved ahead of the election, Amersham's MP is trying to get an emergency debate on HS2

Cheryl Gillan MP called for an emergency debate on HS2 Ltd at Business Questions - which sets out the Parliamentary timetable for what is likely to be the final week of this Parliament before the General Election.

The Chesham & Amersham MP asked for this debate in the light of the Chair of HS2, David Higgins appearance before the Transport Select Committee this week where he told MPs about HS2's failure to consider conflicts of interest which led to the CH2M company withdrawing from an engineering contract worth £170million.

"This is a massive project, the largest infrastructure project in Europe, so we need urgently to examine whether the HS2 Ltd management is fit for purpose and we need an emergency debate"

The Leader of the House and Aylesbury MP, Rt Hon David Lidington MP, said that there had been failures in due diligence and the Secretary of State for Transport had been questioned about this by MPs on the Transport Select Committee.

Mr Lidington said the government gives high priority to fair and transparent procurement procedures. He wished Mrs Gillan a happy birthday for 21 April and congratulated her on her continued campaigning on behalf of constituents about HS2.

Cheryl Gillan said:

" I am sorry that there will not be parliamentary time available as it is vitally important to keep monitoring the project carefully,"
