Last day on Wendover speed limit petition

Wendover 1

7:55am 13th August 2017

Today's the last day to sign a petition, calling for a speed-limit cut in Wendover.

People behind it want all residential streets to be 20mph, instead of 30.

They say it'd make the whole town and Halton safer

The petition page says:

The speed limit currently enforced around Wendover and Halton is too high and is endangering the lives of children and citizens living in these areas. Our current speed limit of 30 mph is 60% higher than the 18.6 mph speed limit common in Northern Europe.

A study conducted in 2017 by Professor Jodie Plumert of the University of Iowa found that children up to their early teenage years really struggle in terms of consistently crossing roads safely, collision rates for a 10 year old being as high as 1 in 20 shows this.

Because of this, we want to see the speed limit lowered to 20 mph especially near schools and residential areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) conveys the importance of this through stating that 20 mph is “a safe speed on roads with possible conflicts between cars and pedestrians, cyclists or other vulnerable road users” and that councils are not fulfilling their responsibilities to protect people by enforcing speed limits as high as 30 mph.
