Model of Great Train Robbery scene on display

Bucks Rail Centre 2

Published by the Mix96 News Team at 8:01am 13th August 2017

A newly completed model of the scene at Bridego Bridge of the Great Train Robbery of 1963 is on display at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre today.

It includes models showing a corner of the kitchen at the robbers’ hideout, Leatherslade Farm, as the police found it shortly after the robbery.  A member of the gang plays Monopoly with ‘real’ money, and posters provide details of and background to the robbery that was committed 10 and a half miles from Quainton.

The Mail Rail Experience, part of The Postal Museum in central London, will be opening in September 2017 and the Museum is bringing its travelling exhibition about Mail Rail to Quainton for the event. Between 1927 and 2003 the railway ran between Paddington railway station in west London and the Eastern District Post Office in Whitechapel.  The Centre’s own Mail Rail car (No 803) that dates from 1930 and arrived at the Centre in 1983 will be on show across the footbridge in the Centre’s museum.

Volunteers will be giving PowerPoint presentations,  one reviewing the carriages located at various heritage railway centres, while the other will explain the role in moving the UK’s mail of Railnet – a fully integrated national letter post distribution system inaugurated in 1996.

Entrance fees to the Centre include free trains rides, admission to the Moving the Mail event and other features on the site.  There is a small charge for rides on the site’s miniature railway.  Hot and cold food and drinks are available in the Visitor Centre.

The event starts at 10:30am today (13/08) at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.
