Decision to close Sports and Social Club put on hold

Bucks County Council

(Updated 6:05pm 12th September 2017)

The decision to close the Bucks Sports and Social Club in Aylesbury has been put on hold.

A Select Committee reviewed a call-in on the decision and decided that the evidence needed to be re-evaluated and the public consulted.

They also suggested allowing 3 months for a final decision to allow sufficient time for the consultation and so ways of keeping it open can be explored.

The Bucks Sports and Social Club had been seen as having the following issues:

  • Substantial budget pressure.
  • Insufficient income generation.
  • High level of management overheads.

Today members of the Finance, Performance and Resources Select Committee had been tasked with evaluating which of the options below would be the best course of action for the club.

  1. Retain as is.
  2. Close the whole building and external facilities from 31st October 2017. Existing bookings up until 31st October 2017 will be honoured.
  3. Consider the creation of an alternative delivery vehicle, for example transfer the Club to a Community Interest organisation to run.
  4. Close the bar section of the Bucks Sports and Social Club, and retain sports and social facilities on site.

Different members of the committee suggested different options, but all were in agreement that the decision to close the club should be closely reviewed and ways of keeping it open should be explored in depth.

The meeting was streamed live - you can watch it back here.
