Under Aylesbury: Exploring the County Museum's tunnels

Secrets beneath Aylesbury's streets have been revealed this week, as people explored some of the town's tunnels.

Bucks County Museum decided to open up their stretch of the hidden network, to sell-out crowds.

We went for a look, before more people came down for a spooky tour.

Emma Ward-Greenway has been leading the tours:

"The room we're stood in at the moment is currently our wine cellar, it's probably one of the oldest parts.

"It possibly dates back to around 1750, possibly older.

"This is the part of the tour where we do a little bit about creepy creatures and things we have in the collection, like the Death's Head Hawkmoth, which is supposed to be an omen of death."

The tunnels include a few passages, including one leading to this opening (above) going even further down and a nook which includes a trapdoor under the floor of the museum's gift shop.

Emma told us they had no idea how popular these tours would be.

She added:

"People love it.

"I think it's the obsession with the whole tunnels under Aylesbury thing.

"We've had really good feedback so far and we are planning to run them again."

There seems to have been a whole network of these passageways under the town centre.

The King's Head and the old Blacks shop famously have openings to them, with the thought that these were used as escape routes during the English Civil War.

Emma said:

"There's a lot that we don't know about this place and the fact that we've got tunnels and basements blocked-up is really a mystery that we can't solve."
