Council housing list closing

Published by the Mix96 News Team at 7:55am 20th January 2018.

People waiting for Council houses in Tring and Berkhamsted need to make sure they get onto a new-look waiting list.

Currently nearly 6,000 people are on Dacorum Borough Council's housing waiting list, but there are another 6,750 people on a 'deferred register' which is going to be closed from 1 April 2018..

The 'deferred register' has people on it who are not eligible to bid for social housing.

Here's what the council told us:

If deferred applicants' needs don't change, there is no possibility that they will be offered housing. In the light of this, Dacorum Borough Council will no longer be keeping a list of these applicants who are assessed as not being in housing need.

Dacorum Borough Council is contacting all applicants on the 'deferred register' to ask them to check their application details. If their circumstances have changed, they now may be eligible to start actively bidding for homes on Moving with Dacorum.

The changes reflect the reality both locally and nationally that there are simply not enough suitable homes to meet everybody's needs, despite the council starting a new affordable homes building programme in Dacorum in 2013.

We understand that many people will be disappointed"

Councillor Margaret Griffiths, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Dacorum Borough Council, said:

"When reviewing the Allocations Policy, we consulted with new tenants and housing applicants so that we could take their views into account.

"We want to make sure that council homes go to people in greatest housing need, that we do not discriminate unlawfully and that we make best use of our resources.

"Whilst we understand that many people will be disappointed at the closure of the deferred register, we do not believe that maintaining thousands of records for applicants with no realistic chance of ever being allocated a council home meets anyone's aims.

"For those on the Active Register, our new single offer policy will ensure that applicants consider properties carefully and are selective when placing their bids."
