Love it or loathe it - the day is finally here.

Aylesbury is going to be the new home of the UK's first statue of the legendary singer-songwriter David Bowie.

The statue itself is made up of several of Bowie's personas throughout the years, who will now live under the Long Lionel Arches in Market Square.

It will also be lit up, play a Bowie song on the hour from 9am - 9pm, and even have a web cam which people can view online.

So how did we get here? And why Aylesbury?

The timeline of Aylesbury's David Bowie Statue

It's not unreasonable to suggest that David Stopps from Aylesbury may well be the town's biggest Bowie fan.

He single-handedly took his dream of having a David Bowie statue in his home town from idea to reality.

After spending around six months convincing all the councils here to agree to the idea, David then had the simple task of raising at least £100,000 to fund it.

So he started a Kickstarter campaign to get it done.

And, to the disbelief of some, and elation of others, the campaign took off. Thousands of donations poured in from around the UK, and a large number from abroad too.

David said:

"Over a third of the people who invested in the statue through the campaign came from outside the UK."

So, money sorted, the statue idea was on.

Established sculptor Andrew Sinclair was drafted in to design and sculpt the final product.

Back in May last year we got our first look:

Since then, the wait has been on. David Stopps had hoped to unveil the statue in September last year, but that clashed with development of 'The Exchange' - a new restaurant plaza close to where the Bowie statue will be.

With David also intending the statue to have lighting, music and a web cam, planning permission from AVDC was still being debated just days before the unveiling itself.

It was finally granted on 22 March - just three days before the unveiling.

So despite taking over two years, the world's first statue of David Bowie is here.

Immortalised, for better or worse, in Aylesbury.
