Bowie fans turn out in Aylesbury to see Earthly Messenger

Hundreds have turned out to see the UK's first David Bowie statue in Aylesbury.

This afternoon, underneath the Long Lionel arches, Earthly Messenger was finally unveiled to the world, after over two years in the planning and making.

David Stopps, from Friars Club, was of course there, as well as sculptor Andrew Sinclair, Mp David Lidington, other dignities from the town and music industry, but also, fans.

That included Peter, whose name is on the Earthly Messenger statue dedication.

He was at Bowie's concert at Friars Club:

"It was an amazing experience.

"Of course he wasn't that famous at that particular time, he was a tremendous performer, he had tremendous potential and you could see that."

So his son contributed to the statue fund in his name. Peter added:

"It was a complete and utter surprise. He obviously knew I was a big fan of Bowie and he took it upon himself to do it.

"It has just been a fantastic experience today. Unbelievable."

Some came from as far away as the USA and China to be here for the event.

Alexander came from Italy with his brother.

He said:

"I came because I'm a big Bowie fan.

"I'm a friend of David [Stopps] and have been to Aylesbury before, so it was a pleasure to be back.

"The statue will mean a lot for you living here, I envy you. I wish we had a Bowie statue in my town, but we have good wine so..."

#Aylesbowie

The town was renamed for the day, after a petition to change it to Aylesbowie.

People seem to get on board...

Resurgence for new music?

Bowie obviously performed in Aylesbury at the Friars Club, back in the 70s.

He was one of many artists to come through the town then and some feel this could be an opportunity to encourage that again.

Ruby, from Callow Saints - a band we've featured on Mix96 Discovers - is one of them:

"Anything that will bring people to Aylesbury, that show people what a good town it actually is, with the live music scene at the moment, with some brilliant, young, original bands - if that brings people here, I think that is incredible."
