BCC leader: Business as usual until new council starts

At the end of last week, we heard that Buckinghamshire will have one big council in early 2020.

But now that decision has been made, what's next?

We caught up with the County Council's leader, Martin Tett, who had campaigned for the one council option.

"I have written to all the district council leaders saying that now is the time that the decision has been made, for us to come together, put the past behind us and work together positively to create this new council.

"I'm going to ask for a meeting with the government, because I want to know what their plans are."

Although the announcement was made on Thursday, this isn't a quick change.

Will the council still be based in the tower?

There is a lot of work to be done in terms of where the council will be based, how it will actually be formed, etc.

Martin added that, for the County Council now, it's business as usual:

"Even with the announcement, we are talking May 2020 before the new organisation is established legally.

"It will probably take more time after that to actually work through all the cost savings and so on.

"So we have really got to put in place the savings that will see us through the next two to three years."

The hope is that services can be improved by the change and that everyone will have a local point-of-contact to talk to the new council.

The District Councils said they were disappointed by the decision and would be looking at their position.
