Not enough cemetery spaces in Buckingham

Not enough cemetery spaces in Buckingham

Published by the Mix96 News Team at 5:38am 6th November 2018.

People in Buckingham may not have anywhere to bury their loved ones, as the town runs out of spaces at the cemetery.

A planning application was put in three years ago for a new burial ground on Tingewick Road, but nothing has happened yet.

There are worries that the available burial grounds are running low, with only 34 left on Brackley Road.

On average, that will last for two years but it will be at least 18 months before additional land is used at Brackley Road or for Tingewick Road to start accepting burials - if it ever happens.

Councillor Robin Stuchbury doesn't want to end up turning locals away:

"I don't want to be discussing with someone why we are unable to take a person who grew up in the town and had an aspiration that they would live in the town then at the end of the life be in the town, and discuss that with their family.

"These things are very emotive, they upset people.

"At that time of life, you do not need an upset.

"We have to get this application through."

Robin also added, putting money into two cemeterys will only cost locals more money:

"What I'm really worried about is if we have to spend money on the old cemetery, which we should be spending on the new cemetery, it means we will double tax the residents of Buckingham twice to do the same job."

Henry Allmand is AVDC's Group Manager for Built Environment Services.

"We are currently considering the final legal matters related to this application.

"While this is causing a slight delay in the conclusion of the application, AVDC is acting in the best interests of the local community to ensure the benefits of the application are permanently secured for local people.

"We acknowledge that this application has taken longer than we would have liked to progress, and we appreciate that local people are very concerned about this issue.

"Accordingly, it is a priority for our planning service to conclude."
