Luca Campanaro

Published by Charlotte Fisher at 5:57am 9th January 2019.

Today Aylesbury says goodbye to a much loved teenager who sadly died after a freak football accident.

Luca Campanaro was described by his mum, Joanne, as her "gorgeous, gentle giant".

The 14-year-old was the goalkeeper for Bedgrove Dynamos.

They were playing an away game against Harefield when he went to save the ball and was accidentally kneed in the head.

Luca was a student at Mandeville School

He was airlifted to the Royal London hospital but sadly there was nothing doctors could do for him.

Luca was left with catastrophic brain injuries and sadly passed away on 10th December.

Today, family and friends will be saying their final goodbye's at St Mary's Church thanks to you.

After the tragedy, the Aylesbury community raised over £25,000 for Luca's family, so they are able to give him the send off he deserves.

His Mum, Joanne, spoke to us after the tragedy:

"They allowed us to see Luca and he didn't have a mark on him.

"It was surreal, to be told that your son's not going to survive but there's not a mark on him is just incomprehensible.

"It just doesn't sink in."

She also wants to thank everyone for their support:

"I can't thank you enough.

"The messages of support have made what seemed like an impossible experience to get through, possible.

"I couldn't ask for a better community.

"Every single person in Aylesbury has done my son proud, I couldn't ask you for anymore.

"There aren't words to say how much thanks I have."

Luca's funeral is taking place at St. Mary's Church at 12pm today (9th Jan).
