Helping Bucks students achieve their potential

Adviza mentoring

Published by Charlotte Fisher at 5:42am 14th January 2019.

A mentoring project in Buckinghamshire needs more volunteers to help kids reach their goals.

Lucky Break mentoring by Adviza, recruits volunteers who go into schools to mentor teenagers who need help or guidance to achieve their potential.

On Adviza's website they describe their service as:

Mentoring is using your experience of life and work to support and encourage another to grow, develop and achieve their potential.

Our Lucky Break mentoring programmes support young people and adults across the Thames Valley who require help with confidence, resilience, employability and life skills.

Each mentor brings their individual experience and skills and meets their mentee in either a school or commuity setting. We provide every mentor with up to one day of training, resources, DBS check and on-going support.

They are running a mentoring programme at two secondary schools in Aylesbury starting early this year. They're taking place at:

  • The Grange School
  • The Mandeville School

The Captain of My Ship programme is a bespoke mentoring programme designed to support young people who are not achieving their full potential.

It is a Careers and Enterprise Company funded programme at schools across four counties.

It has been created as a young person is five times less likely to end up "NEET" (not in employment, education or training) if they have had an interaction with someone from business.

This is why they are looking for mentors from companies in the local area to work in neighbouring schools and share knowledge and experience of the workplace.

The sessions are held in the school during school hours. All we ask is for mentors to attend a day of training (to include safeguarding, mentoring techniques etc.) and then one hour a week for the duration of the 14 week programme.

In return mentors will gain useful skills in mentoring, communicating with and understanding the issues that face young people today.
