Improvements being made to Amersham leisure centre plans

Mix96 News - Update

Published by Dan Gooding at 12:57pm 15th February 2019.

More time is being given to refine plans for Amersham's new leisure centre.

On Thursday night, Chiltern District Council's Planning Committee deferred the decision to build a state-of-the-art leisure, sports and community building in King George V Road, Amersham.

The new Chiltern Lifestyle Centre will feature a gym, a spa, an eight-lane, 25 metre swimming pool, a diving / teaching pool, a children's splash pad area, a four badminton court sports hall, squash courts, a climbing wall, library, café area and community centre.

The Planning Committee has asked for further work to be done on parking provision, the design of the sports hall, the thermal ratings of the building and the overall impact of the new centre on the local area.

This will then be considered by the Planning Committee again before it is put before Chiltern's full Council meeting for a final decision.

Councillor Michael Stannard, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Support Services said:

"This is an important and once-in-a-lifetime decision and we want to make sure we get it right.

"There is still work to be done but we are confident we can make this happen and have fantastic facilities for future generations to use and enjoy.

"We know we have public support, as shown through the extensive local consultation undertaken over the last three years, with 4,500 people responding and over 80% supporting the redevelopment of the Chiltern Pools.

"What we have done so far on pre-design work including ground investigations, legal searches, services and land swap negotiations, will continue to be relevant and will be used for any future development."
