Aylesbury Prison has been placed in special measures.

The Young Offenders Institute, on Bierton Road, was given the status by the Ministry of Justice last week, but the news has only just come to light.

A Prison Service spokesperson said:

"We have placed HM YOI Aylesbury in special measures as of last week which simply means we have determined it needs additional support from the centre to drive improvements."

The prison, which houses high-risk young offenders, has been struggling for some time, when it comes to staffing and safety.

What's happening?

HM Prison
  • HM YOI Aylesbury went into special measures on 4th March 2019.
  • This is an internal process that HM Prisons and Probation Service undertakes.
  • It is not prompted by any external organisation such as the Prisons Inspectorate.

As part of the special measures process, the MoJ say they are currently working with the Governor to assess how the establishment can make further improvements to safety, living conditions and regime delivery.

They are developing a plan to provide appropriate support which will involve a reduction in the population to create capacity for this work.
