The Commonwealth flag was raised in Aylesbury's Market Square this week.

Buckinghamshire County Council Chairman, Netta Glover, raised the flag on Monday (11th March) to mark national Commonwealth Day.

The event, celebrated across the globe, gives the opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of the 53 countries who make up the Commonwealth and the history and values that bind them together.

Later in the day Netta attended a Citizenship Ceremony at Taplow Court, welcoming 13 members of the local Bucks community from nine different nations including Australia, India and Nigeria, as new British citizens.

Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, HM Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire presented each of the new citizens with a certificate denoting their British Citizenship and a commemorative badge.

Sir Henry was joined by:

  • The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire
  • Professor Ruth Farwell
  • Cllr Noel Brown
  • Cabinet Member for Community Engagement
  • Public Health and other civic dignitaries.

Speaking after the event Netta said:

"Commonwealth Day may not be widely recognised by the public but is important that we, as a nation, celebrate our membership.

"The Commonwealth is an important body that brings together a host of nations around the world with a common goal of creating improved social and economic wellbeing and working together to improve the lives of all our citizens around the globe."
