Bucks goes green for Garden Re-Leaf Day

Published by Mix96 News at 1:09pm 22nd March 2019.

If you see loads of walkers, bike riders or supporters around Bucks today with green splattered hand prints on their t-shirts, you're looking at those taking part in Garden Re-Leaf Day.

A number of people are taking part in special sponsored endurance challenges to raise money for Greenfingers Charity, which is based in Beaconsfield.

Garden Re-Leaf Day has been described as the garden industry's answer to Comic Relief.

Greenfingers works to create magical and inspiring gardens for children at hospices and their families - most hospice fundraising goes towards the inside of the hospice, and there's often little extra to put towards the outer area.

Garden Re-Leaf Day Greenfingers Charity's biggest fundraiser - it's been running for eight years and has raised over £600,000 in that time.

Challenges this year have included a sponsored 10 or 20-mile walk through the Chiltern Hills and a 25, 50, 75 and 100-mile cycle ride through the Buckinghamshire countryside.

Those taking part have been wearing special branded t-shirts, with green splattered handprints on them.

More than 100 people have descended on World's End's Garden Centre in Wendover for the event today, a lot of them from the garden industry who recognise how important gardens are, and realise the positive impact it can have on children at hospices and their families.

Along with the challenge events, a number of garden centres and hotels have taken part in Garden Re-Leaf Day, hosting quiz nights, cake sales and more.

Greenfingers has created 55 special gardens in hospices around the country, and has a further waiting list of hospices that need help.
