A young girl from Buckingham who died last year is still touching hearts around the world.

Maisie Wood was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was just two-years-old last March and passed away in September 2018.

Now, people are honouring the little girl by painting rocks and hiding them across the globe, for other people to find.

Julie Wood, Maisie's mum, told Mix96 where the idea of the rocks came from:

"The rocks idea came from the fact that Maisie and I enjoyed going for walks together and looking for rocks to re-hide.

"I was in the Buckingham Rocks group and we enjoyed being a part of that. Once, when I commented on Facebook that we had missed out on finding a CBeebies rock, someone kindly painted one especially for Maisie, that she loved.

"I saw and experienced the happiness of finding rocks first hand so I thought it was a way to spread Maisie love and help her to travel the world.

"We always wanted to take her on amazing adventures – this way we hope she can still can have those."

Julie continued:

"The response from the Buckingham Rocks members to the initial post on there about painting some rocks for Maisie was fantastic, and prompted us to create the group so we could track all the comments and the journeys the rocks go on more easily.

"We love seeing rocks around town and the more people adding colour to Buckingham the better!

"And Maisie loved colourful things - red and yellow were her favourite colours, and she loved rainbows and butterflies, anything bright and bold, so to be able to create something that she would love was important.

"And we want these rocks to go all over the world, to take her on amazing adventures, albeit in a different way to the adventures we’d always hoped she’d have."

Maisie's family has been overwhelmed with the support

They can't thank everyone enough:

"We’re thrilled that people from all over the world, people we’ve never met, want to join in painting rocks.

"People in America, France, Belgium and all over the UK.

"And it’s lovely to hear that families are planning on painting rocks together, and having fun.

"We’ve also been told that some school and nursery classes are joining in, and the children will be painting rocks to hide on school trips or their holidays, and that has really made us happy, that she is still helping people have fun together.

"We just want Maisie to be remembered, and the fact that people want to help us do that is fantastic."

Maisie's parents are doing it all for charity, they're raising money for:

  • Helen & Douglas House
  • CLIC, for children with cancer
  • Oxford Hospitals charity
  • Supershoes
