Woman found dead in Northchurch was ex-mayor

A woman found dead at a home in Northchurch this morning has been revealed to be the former Mayor of Berkhamsted.

The body of Janette Dunbavand and her husband John, an ex-Conservative councillor, were discovered just before 8am this morning.

The pair, who were both 81, had lived in the £750,000 secluded detached two-storey white pebbledashed cottage in Darrs Lane, Northchurch for decades.

Police were called to the address after reports of concern for the welfare of the couple.

The pair were pronounced dead at the scene by officers and ambulance staff who attended.

The home - called Little Oaks - was then cordoned off and an investigation began by forensic officers in white suits.

A tent was erected in the front garden.

Police said:

"The circumstances around the deaths are currently being investigated and police remain at the scene.

"This appears to be an isolated incident and we are not seeking anyone else in connection with this."

Neighbours said the police had reassured them that they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

They also said Janette had been living with dementia.

One commented:

"It is a very, very sad case. The police are not telling us much, but we know Janette had dementia and was not able to recognise people."

Another made this comment:

"She had lived in that house all her life. She was born in it. Her father was the builder and I think she owned a lot of the land that the other houses have been built on.

"They were both Conservative councillors in the area, years ago."

The couple had a daughter who lives in Australia and a son who lives locally.

They were both former directors of Berkhamsted School Enterprises Limit.

Until 1999 Janette was a director of Hertfordshire Building Preservative Trust.
