AVDC confirm they own Aylesbury's old bingo hall

Aylesbury's old bingo hall, which shut down two months ago, is now owned by AVDC.

Gala's closure seemed really sudden back in February and people queued out the door and up the High Street on its last day.

You may remember that when the news broke, a petition was started to keep the 1930s building and use it as a music venue.

There have been worries AVDC want to bulldoze it and use it as access to Exchange Street car park.

Now Mix96 has seen an email saying the council own the empty site.

There are worries the building could go for access to Exchange Street car park

In it, it says the building would need a lot of work if it was kept.

Several parties have apparently been in touch with the council, expressing interest in the building's future.

Town centre refurbishment headlines

When we asked AVDC about it, they said there wasn't much to tell, other than they are keeping options open.

They confirmed they owned the building, but said this statement from earlier in the year was still valid:

"The indicative 2014 master plan for the Exchange Street car park and some of the adjacent buildings, showed the Gala Bingo site (the old Granada Cinema building) being demolished, with the space being used for mixed-use development with a new entrance onto the High Street to better connect the High Street to The Exchange -bringing increased footfall to that part of town.

"However, we've always maintained that because of the volatile retail market,we'd develop The Exchange in phases; which is what we've done, with phase one about to complete.

"AVDC is committed to the ongoing regeneration of the town centre, and with Garden Town status,we're keen to explore the next phase, while in the meantime bringing forward the improvement schemes for Kingsbury and Market Square.

"Although we wouldn't be in a position to retain and manage the Gala Bingo site on a non-commercial basis, we've always said that we're open to suggestions for its future use."

Only time will tell if this bit of Aylesbury history stays, or goes for more new development.
