We ask MoJ about Bucks prison absconders

There have been concerns raised about the number going on the run from HMP Springhill.

We ask MoJ about Bucks prison absconders

At least 14 inmates have absconded from Springhill Prison near Aylesbury in the last year.

But what do the Ministry of Justice have to say about this?

All these absconders - we counted at least 13 since last April - have raised a lot of questions.

Mostly these concerns are about security at the prison itself and if we are safe living nearby, as we're usually told not to approach those on the run.

Why is this happening?

The site is an 'open prison'.

This is where men who are coming to the end of their sentences are held.

Often they have been held in much higher-category prisons for a whole variety of offences.

A report published a year ago raised concerns about inmates on day release absconding and it seems this is still an issue.

What do the MoJ have to say?

After having a Freedom of Information Request for statistics on the issue rejected, under FoI rules, we asked the Ministry of Justice about all of these concerns.

Our request to the MoJ included:

"...many have raised concerns about security at the site.

"Are people living nearby safe?

"What is being done to reduce this number?

"People are clearly worried and we want to give them some answers."

But what we had in return didn't seem to answer any of these questions.

A spokesperson told us:

"Absconds from open prison are extremely rare and we work closely with police to ensure prisoners are recaptured.

"Those who abscond serve extra time behind bars in a closed prison."

We do see that happen, with many absconders recaptured and given extra time.

But it will be interesting to see what inspectors have to say when they next go back to Springhill.

Arrest made

Police say they arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of absconding from lawful custody at HMP Springhill yesterday (Tues) in Uxbridge.
