50 years ago the first gigs were held by Friars Club in Aylesbury.

This club would promote up-and-coming bands, but go on to host some of the biggest names in music history.

Of course, David Bowie came to Aylesbury a few times, and Aylesbury legend John Otway has performed here several times, but there have been several more.

We take a look at the acts who passed through the Vale.

The Clash

One of the most famous punk rock bands of all time, The Clash visited Aylesbury in 1980.

You can see them performing London Calling above.

Tangerine Dream

Shortly after Friars moved to the Civic Centre, this electronic music band performed.

The German group is still going in 2019, releasing an album two years ago.

Genesis

One of the world's most famous rock bands, Genesis performed here multiple times.

It was seen as one of their favourite early venues, returning to Friars even when they had reached the big time.

Roxy Music

Another 1970s rock band, Roxy Music came to Friars in 1972, just as they were getting big.

Although they have been on-and-off over the years, the band is still active.

Iggy Pop

Yet another famous name, Iggy Pop returned to live music for the first time in five years here in Aylesbury in 1977.

His band actually featured David Bowie on the keyboard!

The Pretty Things

One of the original acts, in 1969, The Pretty Things were still active until a couple of years ago.

They actually returned to Aylesbury in 2009, to play the first Friars Club gig in 25 years.

Cockney Rebel

Another 1970s rock band, Cockney Rebel actually performed here four times in one year!

The Police

It seems strange to think of stars like Sting performing in Aylesbury now, but The Police came here twice.

Friars welcomed the band in 1979 and 1982, adding to their list of bands to have played here whilst their popularity grew and then returned despite being world-famous.
