Village reacts to loss of Wendover pub

Wendover has been reacting today after the sad loss of a popular pub.

Around 40 firefighters were called to the Village Gate just after 3am, which had caught fire.

Crews have been on the scene all morning (5th Aug), which was a shock for many in the village to wake up to.

There was quite a reaction on our Facebook page:

We spoke to Ben Glazier, who lives down the road from the pub:

"A load of noise woke us up at about 3 o'clock this morning.

"The fire brigade was having to pump water from the end of our road up to the Village Gate.

"It was so sad when I walked up there.

"I saw the fire was still going, there were quite a few fire engines there and a tanker as well."

Ben was also only there on Friday night:

"It's our local pub, we've been going there for years.

"There id a new couple that took over earlier this year and they've been doing really well.

"They have managed to build a real old pub atmosphere back again.

"We took the kids there on Friday and had a lovely meal there.

"So, it is incredibly sad and a really sad loss for Wendover."

The Village Gate is "devastated"
