Mix96 starts 'Tonne of Tins' campaign for Aylesbury foodbanks

Published by Dan Gooding at 8:20am 23rd August 2019.

More food is being given out than coming in at Aylesbury Foodbank - so Mix96 is doing something about it.

We are going to be helping families in need with our Tonne of Tins campaign, which starts today.

We are aiming to collect just that: a tonne of tinned food for both Aylesbury Foodbank and Vineyard Storehouse.

Heather Joy-Garrett, from the Foodbank, said:

"For the first time ever in July this year, we saw donations be considerably less than the amount we had to hand out.

"I haven't completed all the figures on the amount we gave out in July, but it has already reached 1.5 tonnes."

Heather puts the increase down to Universal Credit, saying they have seen a spike over recent months.

In the summer months they also give out more products for children because they won't be getting their school meals during the holidays.

The charity often includes more crisps, squash and even freezer pots in their family boxes.

They desperately need donations of certain products including:

  • Tinned meat
  • Tinned vegetables
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • Tinned fruit
  • Fruit juice
  • Sponge puddings
  • Tinned custard
  • Tinned rice puddings
  • Chocolate
  • Cereal

How to get involved:

Bring your tinned food to:

  • Mix96 on Bourbon Street in the town centre
  • Perrys on Bicester Road

We are collecting until 20th September.
