Bucks children will not need to resit the 11+

Published by Charlotte Fisher at 4:22pm 20th September 2019.

After an urgent investigation into the 11+ test in Buckinghamshire, children will not need to resit the exam.

Last week, many pupils here took the test but we received reports that the question and answer sheets did not match up.

We spoke to one mum in Aylesbury at the time, who told us about her daughter's experience:

"They had started the test, they were working through the test and my daughter noticed that the answer sheet did not correlate with the questions.

"So she put her hand up to notify the teachers and noticed a lot of other hands were up around the room."

The Grammar Schools - who issue the test - apologised for any anxiety that was caused and an urgent investigation has been taking place over the last week.

Now, we've had an update from GL Assessment, the exam provider, who say children do not need to resit the exam.

They have taken a close look at the questions that followed the two incorrect questions and the paper as a whole, their analysis shows that the test performed well and within expectations of an admissions exam.

Mix96 has seen the letter sent to parents that states:

"Both GL Assessment and The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) are in agreement
that no retesting is needed or advised.

"A number of parents have contacted us to emphasise that the prospect of children resitting any test would put them under undue pressure and we can confirm that this has been ruled out."

They will be undertaking further analysis over the next week or so, and results of that will be sent out on the 30th September.

We've also had a joint statement from GL Assessment and The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools on today’s update:

“We have updated parents and carers today on the progress of our investigation and the actions we have taken this week to ensure that all children receive fair and accurate results following the secondary transfer process.

“Our analysis indicates that the results are reliable and accurate. Therefore GL Assessment and The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) are in agreement that no retesting is needed or advised.

“When the results of our analysis have been completed and independently verified, they will be shared with parents and carers.

“Once again we want to apologise to the children and their parents for any distress or anxiety this may have caused. Our priority is to provide a fair outcome for all children, and we are taking all necessary action to ensure this is the case.”
