A local home care provider is hosting an innovative community dementia awareness day.

Caremark is giving members of the public, staff, clients' families and health and social care professionals a glimpse into the daily experiences of someone living with dementia.

The event aims to raise awareness and understanding of dementia during World Alzheimer's month (this September).

There will be the opportunity to take part in the Virtual Dementia Tour, meet and talk to members of the Alzheimer's Society and Caremark professionals, and to see some of the products available for people living with dementia.

The Virtual Dementia Tour is a training programme run by the acclaimed Training2Care, and is medically and scientifically proven to be the most authentic experience that a person with a healthy brain can undergo. It enables them to imagine what it is like to live with dementia more reliably than ever before.

The training includes access to a mobile unit, sponsored by Caremark, equipped with training tools and equipment giving participants an immersive sensory experience comparable to dementia.

Up to 36 participants including Caremark staff, clients' relatives, local doctors and representatives from the Alzheimer's Society have been invited to the training.

The event is taking place from 9:30am to 4:30pm today (26th September) at the Caremark office near Aston Abbotts,

Janis Anderson, Managing Director at Caremark (Aylesbury & Wycombe), commented:

"Dementia is one of the fastest growing and most misunderstood diseases.

"We believe it is vital that as many people as possible gain an insight into how it affects a person's senses.

"It's important to us to continually explore new and innovative ways to develop our staff's skills in a really meaningful way, and the Virtual Dementia Tour is a great way to do this.

"We also recognise just how important it is for our clients' families to be able to empathise with their loved ones so we're very pleased to offer them this unique window into the world of dementia."
