Amersham library moves into temporary location

Amersham library moves into temporary location

Published by Dan Gooding at 2:10pm 5th October 2019.

Amersham's library will close today, before it re-opens in a new, temporary home.

The library, which is currently located on the Chiltern Pools site in Amersham, is due to be demolished in November and library services from that building will end in October.

This is because part of the new Chiltern Lifestyle Centre will be built over the area where the library is at the moment.

In order to ensure residents still have access to a local library for the duration of the building works, the council offices, which are just across the road from Chiltern Pools, will host the library during the development.

So that the move can take place, Amersham Library will close at 4:00pm on Saturday 5 October and will reopen at King George V House at 9:00am on Tuesday 15 October.

The temporary library will take up part of the reception area of the King George V offices, with facilities like computers, photocopying, printing and scanning and the children's library all still being available.

Unfortunately, some sessions like Bounce and Rhyme will temporarily halt during the development but parents and carers can still go to sessions at other libraries in the area.

Amersham Registration Office which is currently in Amersham Library will also be in the council office on Thursdays.

Library staff are being kept updated throughout the process and are looking forward to welcoming library visitors to the new temporary facilities.

Library staff will not be able to assist customers with general council enquiries but will direct people to the appropriate services, whether that is the reception desk or the out of hours phone number.

The new Chiltern Lifestyle Centre building will house Amersham Library once it is complete.

Cllr Mike Stannard, Deputy Leader of Chiltern District Council said:

"After years of planning, it's fantastic to see that building work on the Chiltern Lifestyle Centre project is finally getting started.

"As with any major development, there will be some changes as we go through it, and our top priority is to ensure minimal impact on current users of the Chiltern Pools, staff and residents.

"It's important that residents still have access to a local library for the duration of the building works, therefore, the council offices, which are just across the road from Chiltern Pools, will host the library during the development."

Councillor Gareth Williams, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Communities at Buckinghamshire County Council said:

"It's great to be working with Chiltern District Council on this exciting project which will see a first-class brand new library for Amersham being built as part of this new multi-use development. Our library staff will be on hand to help with any questions and queries during our temporary move."

The new Chiltern Lifestyle Centre will have an 8-lane 25 metre swimming pool with viewing, a diving / teaching pool alongside a kids' splash pad area, four badminton court sports hall, dry diving training facility, two squash courts, climbing wall, children's soft play area and clip 'n' climb, library, café area, pool spectator area, exercise studios, 150 station gym, community centre (events/theatre space and community meeting spaces) and spa.
