Aylesbury's MP calls for HS2 work to stop

Aylesbury's MP says that works being done in preparation for HS2 should stop.

Sir David Lidington says that while the independent review takes place, all construction and preparation works should cease.

We told you on Friday that works near Great Missenden were going ahead despite a formal request to stop from the council.

There is also work going on near Waddesdon, vegetation is being cleared at Steeple Claydon and people in Fairford Leys have just had notice of work starting there, too.

David Lidington told us that it makes the review look like a foregone conclusion:

"Whatever your words, people out here, seeing the works continuing, are inclined to say this review has got to be a sham because why are you continuing to spend money on this if the review concludes that the whole thing ought to be scrapped?"

Sir David told us work carrying on is prejudicing the review underway.

"So we have got people on Fairford Leys, out of the blue, suddenly getting a notification that HS2 wants to take the car park by the football ground and sports fields, for example."

The MP told us the case for the project is 'weaker than ever' and the focus should be on improving infrastructure in the North.

But he added that, if the scheme does go ahead, then we should get a proper tunnel through the Chilterns and past Wendover.
