Designs for HS2 viaducts over Wendover revealed

Published by the Mix96 News Team at 7:50am 9th November 2019.

Plans for the HS2 viaducts, that will go over the A413, in Wendover have been revealed.

Both viaducts are between the Chilterns tunnel portal at South Heath and Wendover.

Part of the plans will be the 'Wendover Green Tunnel' and HS2 say it will be an added feature to the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

As the line passes to the west of Wendover, on the other side of the A413, it will go into the 'green tunnel' which is an artificial tunnel built to hide the line with trees and landscaping on top.

HS2 say they have toned down their impact on the landscape by putting lots of trees around the line to hide it and to use different steel.

  • The 450m viaduct will be supported by nine simple, evenly spaces piers
  • Given the broad sweep of the landscape and visibility of the structure, the ambition has been to create something which complements its surroundings, rather than being a landmark in itself.
  • The girders themselves - which carry the huge weight of each span - will be made of dark weathered steel which, over time, will age to a characteristic dark russet finish.
  • When viewed from a distance, the matt finish of the steel with appear similar in tone to the background landscape, and make the structure look thinner - with the edge of the pale concrete parapet appearing as a right thin horizontal band hovering over the slender piers as it glides across the valley.
  • This effect will be further emphasised by the viaduct piers, which have been extended to almost connect with the parapet, helping to give the appearance of a light and narrow structure.
  • The historic field boundaries and hedgerows will be recreated after the viaduct is built to provide uninterrupted access for farmers and local residents.

Small Dean Viaduct

  • A similar approach has been taken on the small dean viaduct, where HS2 crosses the A413, Small Dean Lane and the Chilterns rail line just south of Wendover.
  • Sitting much lower in the landscape, the underside of the Small Dean viaduct will be 6m above the road, with 5 evenly spaced y-shaped piers carrying the 315m long structure.
  • Again, the contrast between concrete parapet and weathered steel girder is designed to help to make the overall structure look lighter and thinner, with the girder harmonising with the surrounding foliage.
  • Sitting so low in the landscape, Small Dean will always be seen close up. That makes detailing key to the success of the viaduct and the team have worked to emphasis the structural elements with far more prominent deck stiffeners along the edge of the girder which echo Victorian engineering and a clear acknowledgement of the structural forces at play.
