HS2 protests in the Chilterns

Peaceful protests have been happening on the A413 between Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter against a proposed access road.

Local residents and Stopping HS2 campaigners have been out en masse to protest against the proposed access road between the HS2 site in Chalfont St Peter and the A413.

If the planning application is given the go-ahead, the access road could bring 108 more diesel lorries onto the A413 per day for approximately 7 years.

The access road may also cause serious ecological damage - resulting in the destruction of over 80 meters of hedgerow and many mature trees to facilitate the bell mouth of the access road.

The co-founder of Stopping HS2 and protest organiser Elizabeth Cairns has said:

"Local people need to wake up to the destruction that is happening at the hands of HS2 right under our noses...many residents have no idea what this project will actually mean day-to-day for the next 10 years or more of construction".

Elizabeth urges local residents to hold Bucks County Council to account and remind them of the statutory duty to ensure proper ecological mitigation is in place by HS2.

A spokesperson for Bucks County Council said:

"Buckinghamshire County Council has been working since 2015 to secure the option of creating an access road from the A413 to the HS2 vent shaft, so that construction vehicles do not have to use Chesham Lane and other local roads in the Chalfont St Peter area. Given that HS2 construction is now moving ahead, the A413 access road is the best option for reducing the impact of the work on the local community.

"If the planning application is approved, the road will be built by HS2 Ltd's contractors, Align. A full site restoration plan will be in place in order to reinstate the character of the area once construction work is complete."
