New Aylesbury MP will fight HS2

The new MP for Aylesbury says he will fight HS2.

Rob Butler, who was announced as the winner of the election here this morning, made the promise not long after the result was announced.

It comes after many didn't feel former MP, Sir David Lidington, stood up for the constituency enough whilst he was in office.

Rob said:

"Without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest issue locally has been HS2.

"People are frustrated that it is happening at all, they feel that they are being ignored, they feel very strongly that they have argued there is no economic case and that it's, frankly, too expensive.

"They don't feel they have had their voices heard."

He said that even those who have fought for mitigation, such as the Parish Council in Wendover calling for a tunnel past the town, feel that they have not been taken seriously.

The new MP added:

"What I am absolutely determined to do is raise the profile of those issues with ministers.

"I have already had an undertaking from the transport secretary that he will meet me with local residents to look at some of those issues again because, fundamentally, that is the biggest single issue people have been most concerned about."

Rob also said that he would go against Tory whips in the Commons should there be another vote on the high speed rail project.
