Aylesbury school celebrates successful cafe opening

A community in Aylesbury has a cafe again, thanks to school students.

Pebble Brook are using the Healthy Living Centre's cafe as a way to train students, but also create a space for people living on Walton Court to socialise once again.

Harry is one of those working there:

"I'm actually really enjoying it.

"Like, talking to the customers, trying to be as busy as I can preparing all the food, washing the dishes, serving them."

He told us he is in his last year of sixth form and wanted to work somewhere that he is interested in and to learn new things.

That is the real hope for this new cafe, that it will be a training ground in the future for students at the school.

Jackie Robson is in charge of the Further Education Department at Pebble Brook.

She said it's really hard for young people with learning difficulties to get into employment.

"When the cafe space became available at the Healthy Living Centre, I saw it as an opportunity to get in there, get our students working in the catering and hospitality trade and eventually we can showcase this to employers to show them what our students can do."

Since a trial in December, there has been a growth in customers, with positive feedback and returning customers.

Jackie told us about the difference she has seen in Harry:

"His confidence has developed enormously, he is very motivated and it's just giving him that experience that is hopefully going to get him a job."
