You could help design new mini parks for Aylesbury

A competition opens today to design new, mini parks for kerbsides in Aylesbury.

It's part of the Garden Town project and the winner will see their design turned into what is known as a parklet.

The first prize winner will see their design developed into a bespoke public parklet design. Working with local communities, and local councils three sites will be chosen to have a  parklet installed in the spring of 2020. These will transform their kerbside areas into  places to rest, relax and watch the world go by.

The Parklet Design Competition is open to all residents, aged over 16, in Buckinghamshire. Entries can be emailed or delivered to The Gateway offices.

To enter participants must complete an entry form, submit a 500 maximum word description of the parklet describing how it best meets the brief, alongside a drawing or model of their design concept.

From the submitted designs an independent judging panel will review the entries and select the top three finalists who will receive the following prizes:

  • First prize:  £150 high-street shopping voucher and see their design worked up into a public parklet design to be used across Aylesbury.
  • Second prize: £100 high street shopping voucher.
  • Third prize:  £50 high-street shopping voucher.

All finalists will be invited to an award ceremony where they will be presented with a certificate and prize. The competition winner will be announced in February 2020.

Councillor Clive Harriss, Acting Chair of Aylesbury Garden Town said:

"Parklets are a great idea and as we think differently about how to use public space we can create great community spaces for very little cost. I look forward to seeing the designs and to seeing the Aylesbury parklet installed in the summer."

Submissions for the competition will open on Thursday 9 January and closes at 5pm on Thursday 13 February 2020.
