Campaigners unimpressed with John Bercow's spending

Buckingham's old MP has been criticised for his spending in his final few months as Speaker.

John Bercow spent around £12,000 on leaving parties for staff and £1k on a taxi to Nottingham, according to expenses uncovered by the Daily Mail.

The Taxpayers Alliance has criticised the costs, but a House of Commons spokesperson defended the spending.

The Daily Mail's article covers a Freedom of Information Request they made into Mr. Bercow's final few months in office.

Bills included:

  • £2,600 bill for a trip to Brest in France for a Speaker's conference
  • £74 on Heathrow Express tickets
  • £7,000 on a trip to the US
  • £12,000 on retirement parties for senior Commons staff who had worked with him

A House of Commons spokesperson told the Mail:

"In line with long established practice, the Speaker's Office funds the drinks and the pre-dinner reception for the Panel of Chairs dinner...

"...The Speaker's Office has funded retirement receptions for senior staff many times in the past....

And

"Due to heightened security concerns for the safety of MPs, Mr Bercow was advised it was safer for him to travel to the University of Nottingham by taxi, rather than by train."
