Bucks campaigner recognised alongside Greta Thunberg

A Buckinghamshire campaigner has been recognised by The Great Outdoors magazine.

Kate Ashbrook has been given the bronze award for Campaigner of the Year.

Greta Thunberg was awarded  gold, while Chris Packham has taken silver.

Kate has been general secretary of the Open Spaces Society, Britain's oldest national conservation body, for more than 35 years.

She told us what it was like to win alongside such big names:

"It's terrific to be associated with them. They're both people whom I admire, and I just think it is wonderful.

"£I certainly didn't think I'd come third. I expected them to come first and second, but I didn't expect to be third and I am just absolutely delighted by that."

Kate is also chair of Ramblers Great Britain and patron of the Walkers Are Welcome Towns network.

She campaigns to protect open spaces, but also wants people to enjoy them:

"I think everyone should look at the map, or their phone and see where local open spaces are and just get out and start enjoying them. Or join a local ramblers group, there's plenty of them about.

"There are great opportunities to get out there, don't be afraid to do it. Start doing it and you'll discover how wonderful it is.

"Development is only going to increase, so the more we are aware the better it is. We need to vote with our feet and get out there showing how much we care."
