Plan for council to nearly double investment portfolio

Plan for council to nearly double investment portfolio

Published by Dan Gooding at 3:16pm 28th January 2020.

There are plans to nearly double the investments Buckinghamshire's council has when it changes in April.

At the moment, all five councils' property investments total £173 million.

The idea for the new Buckinghamshire Council is to get that to £300m.

In order to do that, a plan being discussed by the Shadow Authority - the group overseeing the transition - says that these priorities should be considered:

  • Strengthening Bucks communities
  • Protecting the vulnerable
  • Improving the environment
  • Increasing prosperity

They say that if they do that, it could mean at least an extra £4.5m to spend on projects each year.

The report adds:

Of course, all that the Council does is set within a legislative context, so that meeting its statutory obligations is a key component determining the actions it takes.

In the context of the capital strategy examples of the statutory requirements are the need to provide sufficient school places, to maintain the highway infrastructure to certain standards and to provide suitable disposal facilities for waste.

Part of the justification as well for this increase is to help fund services and projects as the population grows in Buckinghamshire.

At the moment, predictions show a 50% population increase here by 2050.
