Chancellor set to approve HS2

We are hearing that the Chancellor will back HS2 today.

Cutting through Buckinghamshire, the high-speed line has been controversial and has been under review for several months.

Today, it's thought the Chancellor Sajid Javid will meet with the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

However, we may not get an official announcement this week.

What's been happening?

HS2 Limited have maintained that their plan is the right one for Britain's railways and delivering a more environmentally friendly transport system.

Today's meeting is expected to see the PM, Chancellor and Transport Secretary discuss the costs of the scheme - which could rise to around £106bn.

Mr. Javid has said that he has considered all of this carefully.

Aylesbury's MP has paid a visit to Number 11:

Rob spoke to both the Chancellor, Sajid Javid MP, and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rishi Sunak MP.

Reacting to the press reports, Rob said:

"I have repeated to the Chancellor that HS2 is too expensive and does too much harm to the environment.

"I am convinced that there are better ways to invest in our country's infrastructure and benefit the towns of the midlands and north of England, than by spending more than £100bn on this train line.  What's more, for the people of the Aylesbury constituency, it is all pain and no gain.

"Along with other MPs who oppose HS2, I am seeking an urgent meeting with the prime minister before a final decision is taken"

Yesterday, Boris Johnson told MPs that there wouldn't be long to wait for a final decision and it's rumoured this will be next week.

However, even if the project does get the go-ahead, we won't see services run until the next decade.
