First UK Emergency Service Games coming to Bucks in August

Buckinghamshire is set to host the first Emergency Service games for the UK.

The games will be held across venues in Buckinghamshire in a 20 day event, starting in August.

The goal is to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, while hoping to improve and raise awareness for the mental health of emergency staff.

Mike Downard, a firefighter with Bucks Fire and Rescue, is the co-founder of the games:

"It's not about finding the elite athletes out there. Its about making the decision to have a goal to work towards to get yourself mentally and physically fitter.

"The emergency services personally experience a poorer mental health than the general population, due to the fact what they on a day-to-day basis really does have an impact on them and their families.

"There are international events, but we decided to bring one to the UK and make it more accessible."

Some sports are open to the public as well.

Typically, the services associated with emergency incidents are ambulance, police and firefighters.

However, the Emergency Service Games want people to recognise there are other staffing groups included:

"We've opened up the games to blood bikes, prison services, coast guards, mountain rescue, areas you wouldn't necessarily associate with emergency services.

"This is a bigger thing we are trying to tackle really. Its more about getting people to take part in sport and recognise these other areas work alongside the emergency services and suffer as much as anyone else."

The Emergency Services Games UK website has more information, including how to sign up.
