Anti-Expressway campaigners deliver petitions to Downing Street today

Petitions are being delivery to Downing Street today by anti-expressway campaigners.

The No Expressway Group have organised the walk to deliver their petitioners with over 16,000 signatures.

The Oxford-Cambridge route and 1 million potential homes, has been a controversial plan.

During the election there were claims it would be cancelled, or have a review launched.

Setting off from Old Palace Yard, opposite the Houses of Parliament, NEG will walk to No 10 to delivery the petitions.

Laura Field is chair of the group:

"What we are saying to the government is we should be investing in East-West rail, electrifying it, making it affordable, cancelling this unneeded road and bringing housing targets in line with local need and organic growth.

We're doing this because its a national issue, our environment is a national issue."

There will also be a drop in session held in Parliament for MPs and Peers to hear and learn more about NEG's concerns.

The Parliamentary event is co-sponsored by Layla Moran (Lib Dem, Oxford West & Abingdon), Greg Smith (Conservative, Buckingham) and Daniel Zeichner (Labour, Cambridge).

The group hope the cross-party sponsorship of this event will show the campaign is not about party politics.

Laura explained why they want supporters of 'The Arc' to attend:

"Wouldn't it be great if we had a proper debate about this?

"At the moment things are happening and nobody has had a discussion about it. It feels like things are being imposed.

"As recently as the general election Grant Schapps, Secretary of State for Transport promised an urgent review and nothing has happened.

"We have heard incredible alarm and feedback from people in the communities because they haven't asked.

Supporters of NEG are still able to sign their petition.
